A widow or widower may be eligible to receive benefits on their deceased spouse's record if he or she is at least age 60.

A disabled widow or widower may be eligible to receive benefits on the deceased spouse's earnings record if he or she is at least age 50 and became disabled within 72 months of the death of the wage earner. Generally, the marriage must have lasted for 9 months prior to the death of the insured. There are some exceptions. The amount of benefits is, generally, the same amount that the wage earner would have gotten or did get at retirement.

Divorced widows and widowers are also eligible under similar circumstances if they never remarried and if they were married to the deceased for at least 10 years.
